Trust is what makes innovation scalable

One year at Keylane, with John Reynders, CEO

A year ago today I joined Keylane, and it’s been an energizing twelve months. On day two I was introduced at our annual Life & Pension customer event, with over a hundred customers, partners and colleagues in the room. It was a great induction: less than 48 hours in, it confirmed what I already knew. This is not secondary enterprise software. This is business critical in the core, and people depend on it.

What I expected to be the main agenda

Before I joined, I knew the technology roadmap would be high on my agenda, together with redesigning the operating system of the company. This means aligning product choices, delivery discipline, commercial focus and culture so that our expertise compounds. The software matters enormously, of course, but it’s the operating system of the company that determines how quickly that software evolves.

Keylane has always cared intensely about solving customer problems. That earns trust, and it has created relationships measured in years, often decades. We will build on this strong DNA and scale it to a rapidly growing customer base.

Trust to make innovation scalable

A pension payment cannot be 95% right. A claims process cannot be resilient only on ordinary days. When our software works well, most people will never know Keylane is there, and that is exactly the point. Serious software for serious moments, built by people who understand why the detail matters.

As CEO, that responsibility shapes the questions I ask. Are we designing for the exception as well as the average case? Can we explain a decision? Do we have the resilience and the fallback process when something goes wrong? Those are not merely technical controls; they are leadership choices.

The same principle applies to AI. An AI error in our world is not just an imperfect output. It could affect a claim, a premium or a pension outcome, and therefore somebody’s financial security. That means clear mandates, controlled data access, human accountability, audit trails and human intervention where it is appropriate.

That’s why I don’t see governance as a brake on innovation. In a regulated, mission-critical market, trust is what makes innovation scalable. You can move faster when you know the boundaries, ownership and evidence. Our customers depend on us to combine pace with consequence.

Motion is not progress

A year ago, I thought AI was the biggest technology shift in a generation, and that the market was confusing motion with progress. There were many tools and pilots, but not enough hard questions about which workflow would change, what outcome would improve and who remained accountable.

As models change and increasingly commoditise, the lasting value is in connecting them to domain knowledge, permissions, trusted data and real business processes. So the question for our market is not who has the best model. It is who customers will trust with the data and the decisions.

That is why we built Keylane Automate: orchestrating agents, people and core-platform actions in a governed workflow.

What I want to be true in a year from now

Our customers see Keylane as an even better version of their trusted technology partner. Employees experience a dynamic working environment where they can continuously learn and grow.

Our cloud-native, AI-first platform Keylane Automate has progressed from lighthouse projects to repeatable production workflows with measured customer outcomes. I want us to be able to show our leadership position through real evidence: shorter handling time, better service, more capacity for human judgement and clear control over data and decisions.

Our ambition is to be the technology partner insurers and pension providers trust to run, modernise and grow their businesses, in Europe and increasingly beyond it. But recognition is an outcome, not a slogan. In a year from now, I want customers to say we are even easier to work with, leading in AI innovation and just as dependable. If they say it before we do, we will know we are on the right track.

Innovation Built on Trust

Why the foundation and not the model, determines whether AI delivers value
in insurance and pensions.
